My farminging/horticultural Yorkshire ancestry goes back many generations in the rural areas of North Yorkshire as my current family history research has proved. Have you researched your family history and have you uncovered any surprises? Maybe you would like assistance with your research from Down Your Way readers? Averil Thornton (editor)

What a coincidence I have just started researching my family history this week. Any tips about the best way to go about finding information would be much appreciated. My family lived in Bradford but moving there from Thoralby/Askrigg area in around the 1850's. I've pretty much found them back to this date but believe births/deaths/marriages only go back to 1837. I've been searching the census's available online and forums on genes reunited/my ancestory/family search.org. Can you please tell me the best way of researching before this time. I think the Parish records are the way to go, but how do I locate these. Would really appreciat any help you could give me on this. Many thanks....Chris

I am also from Thoralby (now live only 10 miles away), gradually got back! and now back for good. I also have family who moved to Bradord. If you could let me know surnames, I may know of them, if we are lucky we may be related. I am a bit of a Thoraly 'anorak', currently working on 'Thoralby Transcripts', with a view to putting it on the web.

Parish Records are your next best step. Thoralby is in Aysgarth Parish and all the records are held at the County Archives in Northallerton, but there are copies available in the local studies room at the Dales Countryside Museum, Hawes, only to view and take notes from but they are easier than microfilm viewers which is the alternative. You need to book to use the room: give them a phone call.

Look forward to your reply,
Best wishes.
